Changes in foliar proline concentration of osmotically stressed barley.

چکیده
The amino acid proline is accumulated in plant tissues in response to a variety of stresses. The existence of two routes for its biosynthesis is well documented. However, little is known about the contribution of each pathway to the accumulation of free proline under stress conditions. In the present study young barley plants were subjected to osmotic stress by treating their roots with 25% polyethylene glycol. Prior to stress imposition roots were incubated for 24 h in nutrient solution containing proline or one of its metabolic precursors: glutamate and ornithine. Free proline quantity in the leaves was measured before and after stress. Relative water content (RWC) was used as a measure of the plant water status. Foliar proline levels showed a significant increase in ornithine- and proline-pretreated plants compared to the control. Nevertheless, no considerable changes in leaf RWC were observed. It was shown that before stress application only ornithine but not glutamate was immediately metabolized to proline. Under stress conditions, however, both precursors were converted into proline. The possible role of this amino acid in the processes of post stress recovery is discussed.

Effect of salicylic acid sparay on the leaf ascorbate, proline and quercetin content in ultra-violet stressed Pepper seedlings
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of SA on UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C stressed plants. Data showed that SA counteracted the UV harmful effects on pepper. Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) seedlings sprayed with salicylic acid (SA) and treated with UV-A (320-390 nm), UV-B (312 nm), and UV-C (254 nm) of 6.1, 5.8, and 5.7 W m-2, respectively. UV significantly increased contents of as...

متن کاملContribution of Arginine to Proline Accumulation in Water-stressed Barley Leaves.
Barley (Hordeum vulgare cv Prior) leaves converted l-U-(14)C-arginine to labeled proline. Accumulation of radioactivity in proline was greater in wilted leaves, but only after 9 hours of incubation. As the increase in free proline was detectable after only 3 to 6 hours, it is likely that the observed stimulation of proline labeling represents a result rather than a cause of proline accumulation...

Seeds of chickpea inoculated with Rhizobiumwere sown in pots supplemented with different doses of cadmium (0, 25, 50 or 100mg per kg of soil). At the stage of 30 days after sowing (DAS), the plants were sprayed with 20 mM solution of proline and were sampled at 90 DAS to assess the various parameters. The foliar treatment of proline resulted in the alleviation of the adverse effects generated b...
